Real-Life Impact:How URECA is Empowering Change
The Problem
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, the coldest capital city in the world, experiences temperatures dropping below -35°C. Over 200,000 families—many of whom are climate displaced families previously engaged in rural herding—now reside in the low-income ger districts, where they burn coal to survive the harsh winters. This widespread coal use has resulted in a significant air pollution crisis, posing severe health risks. Through our Coal-to-Solar (C2S) project, URECA is empowering these families to be part of a just and inclusive energy transition, using digital MRV technology to help them shift from coal to clean, renewable energy.

Making an impact
URECA's Coal-to-Solar project replaces coal stoves with solar, batteries, and smart electric heating for families in Ulaanbaatar's ger areas. Many of these are former herder households who moved to the city due to dzud and drought.
Each ger can emit around 12-13 tonnes of CO₂e per year from winter coal use. C2S converts verified emission reductions into carbon credits, helping low-income households access clean energy while creating a scalable model for Central Asia
